1st and 2nd for Vortex Teams
This weekend saw the final rounds of the Zapcat National
Championship held again at Watergate Bay in Newquay.
30 Zapcats battled it out not only facing their competition
but also by the mighty force of the Atlantic ocean as it
produced huge powerful swells on the shore. Sun, Sea, Surf and
Champagne were to make for a fantastic finale to the 2007
season.
Newly crowned 2007 Zapcat Champions
Mick Pritchard
and Baz Minns of Pegasus Vortex Racing didn’t get complacent
about the weekends’ racing, They had one more title they were
after the Zapcat King of the Surf and still had some work to
do to achieve it!
Racers were faced with 7ft sets of rolling surf for Fridays
racing faced by 5 heats each they were in for a rough ride!
Zapcat 08 Pegasus Vortex Racing got off to a blinding start to
take second in their first heat just piped at the post by old
adversaries Anger Management Racing. They went on picking the
right lines reading the surf to take two 1st’s and second and
a third place in the rest of their heats to take them into the
final in pole position!
Team mates Craig Davis and Rob Martin in Vortex Racing also
had a storming day in the surf qualifying with the same points
as PVR to go into the final in second position off the grid.
Both Vortex teams got off to a sturdy start in the day’s
division 1 final making the most of the inside lines. Pegasus
Vortex Racing took the early lead and held on for the rest of
the race to take home their 6th Gold Medal of the Season.
Craig and Rob meanwhile battled it out in second with Jonathan
Hansford and Dan Savage in Strong Language closing them down
every minute! The race went down to the very last lap and 06
Strong language just sneaked past Vortex Racing on the inside
stretch to take second leaving Craig and Rob a well deserved
Bronze and more importantly good points for their second place
championship campaign.
The swells soared for Saturdays racing and organisers decided
for safety reasons to reduce the number of racing heats to 3
heats per team. This meant that each Zapcat would have little
room for error in their heats to ensure their place in the
final!
PVR catapulted themselves into the final with two 1st’s and a
second in the days’ heats and Vortex Racing took consistent
results throughout the day to take them into the final, a must
if they were to hold on to their second place position in the
Championship with 2nd – 6th place anybody’s for the taking!
Pegasus Vortex Racing were just one last race away from taking
the King of the Surf title with an unheard of four gold spots,
and being in pole took full advantage! With an early lead
until disaster struck for Team Suffolk who lost their co-pilot
and the race was restarted!
Go Commando got the best start in the restart and PVR found
themselves in 5th on the back straight, but their luck was in
as Anger Management Racing flipped rounding turn mark four and
the race was restarted
again. Baz and Mick got off to a great start again this time
choosing an easier line through the surf and Craig and Rob in
Vortex Racing were in hot pursuit. Pegasus Vortex Racing held
on to take the Gold medal again and with it the King of Surf
Competition and the Grand Prix weekend and a fantastic finish
to the season!
Craig and Rob comfortably home in second with Go Commando
going to a photo finish with Speedy Hire for third.
With the points all in Vortex Racing Craig Davis and Rob
Martin took second in the Zapcat National Championship as well
as silver in the King of the Surf Contest, making it a one,
two for the Vortex teams and a fantastic years’ racing.
The trophies were awarded at a gala dinner at the Watergate
Bay Hotel where the Champagne flowed and the racers said their
farewells until next season.
The reward for the season along with some trophies a brand new
Zapcat hull.
The new season will commence around May next year bringing
with it the Zapcat 2008 Championship and a new highly charged
and friendly contest!
