/Southsea Zapcat Grand Prix - Rounds 3 & 4

33 Zapcats headed to the South coast location of Southsea this weekend to race in The Solent’s unpredictable and testing racing conditions.

Southsea’s pebbled beach shelves deeply allowing the racing to occur close in to shore, giving those spectators brave enough to face the rain storms a fantastic opportunity to be close to the action.

Racing was fast and furious as the Zapcats made their way around the T-shaped course. With relentless rain and The Solent’s rolling swells conditions weren’t the best for racing and some of the rookie teams were certainly put through their paces.

The two local teams of Pegasus Vortex Racing, Mick Pritchard and Baz Minns (Southampton) and Team Pretty Buoy, Bligh Julius and Charlie Hatfield (Lymington) both had storming weekends on their home turf. With Bligh and Charlie taking their first ever Gold place podium in their racing career on the Saturday and giving a strong battle in Sundays racing to take the bronze showing promising form for the rest of the season as they moved their way up to second in the championship standings despite a disappointing round 2 in Bournemouth.

Pegasus pushed hard all weekend knowing that father and son team of Greg and Kieron Richardson in Team Suffolk were only a hand full of points in front of them in the championship race going into this Grand Prix. Mick and Baz certainly had their minds set on the top spot in the competition scoring 3 firsts and 2 seconds in their heats and secured the silver podium position in the final, giving them the championship lead.

Their prowess continued in Sundays racing as they scored another 3 firsts, a second and a third in their heats and after a restart in the final edged their way ahead to take their first Gold Podium position of the contest. This win also awarded Mick and Baz of Pegasus Vortex Racing the title of Southsea Zapcat Grand Prix Winners and boosted their lead in the championship standings to 350 points.
