Glasgow River Festival Zapcat Grand Prix - Rounds 5 & 6

During the course of the Glasgow Fair weekend in excess of 100,000 people lined the banks of the River Clyde to take part in the festivities. One of the main attractions during the festival was 30 Zapcats competing in Rounds 5 & 6 of the Zapcat National Championship.

Zapcat Pegasus Vortex Racing got off to a flying start on Glasgow’s mighty River Clyde. Last year’s Rookie Champions took their first ever Division 1 podium at the Glasgow River Festival in 2006 securing Bronze in the Sundays racing. Already holding one accolade at this venue and the top championship place to defend this year they set out with something to prove.

Glasgow’s conditions meant that competitors would race in only four heats each and with no Wild Card final qualifying would be tight, as only 6 cats would make it through so every point would be vital.

Pegasus Vortex team mates Michael Pritchard (Hire Station, Southampton) and Baz Minns (Newsquest, Southampton) stormed into the final with three firsts and a second in their heats. Whilst Vortex team mates Energy 69 Craig Davis and Rob Martin had a mixed day of results at a venue where only the best would do they missed out on the final finishing joint 11th in the heats with Go Commando.

Pegasus Vortex continued their run of luck in Saturday’s final finishing 2nd overall only to an outstanding days racing from current Mixed Championship leaders Nathan Williams and Vicky Harris in Anger Management Racing.

Varying conditions on the River Clyde means racers need to stay alert with the tight course and looming river walls creating a wind tunnel generating unpredictable conditions that could see one wrong move sending them for an early bath!

Sunday saw the sun come out and Pegasus Vortex Racing continue their triumphs with another three 1st’s and a third to secure their place firmly in the final where they soared home to success taking their second podium of the weekend but this time in the top spot.

Another mixed day for Team Energy 69 saw them with two thirds and two fourths not quite enough to take them into the final, and losing vital championships points.

With two strong podium positions behind them Pegasus Vortex racing Mick and Baz were awarded the title 2007 Glasgow River Festival Grand Prix winners and another 190 vital points in the championship title race seeing them extend their lead to 124 points over rivals Pretty Buoys Bligh Julius and Ben Toogood.
