Vortex Racing Bask in Glory at
Bournemouth Grand Prix
Bournemouth was basked in sunshine for rounds 9 & 10 of the
Zapcat National Championship last weekend. Whilst people made
the most of the last weekend of the summer holidays 34 Zapcat
crews readied themselves to battle it out in Bournemouth’s
unpredictable conditions.
Two teams lining up to fight it out were current Championship
Leaders Mick and Baz of Pegasus Vortex Racing and their team
mates Craig and Rob in Energy 69 Vortex Racing.
The weekend started with Mick and Baz in Zapcat 08 going head
to head in a time trial with Zapcat 09 Marin Subsea/Delta
Jets, who’s Pilot
George
(Boris) Stroud had arranged for Legendary Adventurer Miles
Hilton-Barber to jump aboard and become the first ever blind
person to pilot a Zapcat.
Heading into the heats current championship leaders Pegasus
Vortex took the lead taking two 1st places in their heats. As
the wind picked up and the racing became frenzied they secured
their place in the final with a 4th, 5th & 6th in the
following heats.
Meanwhile Craig and Rob in Vortex Racing were flying in the
Beach Starts with Rob’s months of training and height giving
him a great advantage leaving others standing on the shore.
Vortex Racing secured two fourth’s, 2nd’s and a 1st in their
heats taking them firmly into the final and with the podium
firmly in sight.
The wind picked up further into the afternoon and Craig and
Rob got off to another great start in the final flying into
second position, a position they held right to the chequered
flag, whilst Mick and Baz fought it out just behind in the
following pack to make it off the start line in 5th and fought
their way up to 4th despite engine damage through a minor
collision to finish just outside the podium places.
With their confidence brimming from their silver medals on the
Saturday and more beach starts as the order of the day Vortex
Racing 69 got off to another fabulous start in Sundays racing,
with 4 first place finishes in their heats giving them pole in
the finals’ starting grid. The Pegasus Vortex duo had a mixed
days results in their heats but purposefully took their place
in the final to make up for their 4th place finish on the
Saturday.
Zapcat 69 led from the start with another lightning beach
start from Craig and Rob, and held their line for the duration
of the 5 lap course. Meanwhile Team Pegasus played a tactical
game after being 4th off the start taking their pit lap after
their first lap to ensure clear water to allow them to gather
speed. The gamble paid off and Vortex Racing sailed home in
first with Pegasus Vortex close behind in second to take the
last vital points before heading to Watergate Bay for 4 rounds
of the King of the Surf Contest!
