Bournemouth Zapcat Grand Prix- Rounds 1 & 2

Vortex Racing got off to a blinding start in the 2007 Zapcat National Championship this weekend in Bournemouth. With three Vortex teams entered for the weekends’ racing there was sure to be Vortex domination one way or another.

In Vortex Racing II Zapcat 55, Martin and Dan started the day in division two their goal for the first days racing was to boost themselves up division one with a good final result. They achieved their goal with a solid 4th place finish in their final. A great result especially as although he’s spent a fair amount of time in the boat it was Dan’s first ever Zapcat race and he was the youngest competitor over the weekend.

Meanwhile Zapcat 08, Pegasus Vortex Racing and 69, Energy 69 Vortex Racing were battling it out in the division 1 field with three times National Champions Wet Willy II as well a few old rivals from the season before. Pegasus Vortex got off to a flying start with Mick and Baz taking four 1st places and a second in their heats.

Into the days division 1 final and boats 08 and 69 were both out to set a precedence amongst themselves as to who was going to be the top Vortex team however a 5th & 6th place finish respectively on the day was slightly disappointing but both teams know that as long as they improve their game and score consistently well over the season they could well be in contention for the years title.

On Sunday Bournemouth was blessed with another sunny day with a large number of beach goers following every moment of the action.

With beach starts instead of rolling deep water starts the more experienced teams took full advantage. Beach starts involve the co-pilot holding the boat whilst standing in the water until the flags drop and then literally flinging themselves in and only at that point can the pilot hit the throttle and engage forward gear. The starter normally has a sense of humour and times it when the biggest waves hit the shore!

With three Vortex boats now in Division One the commentator Dan was getting very confused especially as all three Vortex boats made it through into the days final.

A little disappointed with their 5th place in the Saturday’s final 08 were determined to make it to the podium and with some very tactical and technical driving Pegasus Vortex racing managed to secure second place in the days final and boost their position to 2nd in the overall championship. 69 finished 6th and 55, 9th out of the twelve boats in the finals.
